Why Scandinavian Growers are Switching to the “Closed Greenhouse”

The greenhouse sector is facing a familiar but urgent challenge. In the past week, energy prices in Northern Europe have surged – nearly doubling for the first time since 2022. For growers in Finland and the Nordic region, where heating is the single largest expense, this isn’t just a market fluctuation; it’s a direct hit to operational viability.

A recent feature in Hortidaily highlights a significant shift in response to this volatility: the move toward the “Closed Greenhouse” strategy.

Breaking the “Vent-and-Reheat” Cycle

For decades, the standard practice for managing humidity was simple: open the vents. While this removes moisture, it also exhausts expensive heat and valuable CO2 enrichment into the Arctic air. Growers then have to “reheat” the incoming cold, damp air, leading to massive energy waste.

“Energy efficiency used to be about optimization,” says Matts-Erik Lindqvist, CEO of Hatec Baltic (DryGair’s regional partner). “Today, it’s about resilience. Growers need systems that protect them from energy price shocks while maintaining crop quality.”

Why Internal Dehumidification is the Game-Changer

By transitioning to a closed greenhouse model using DryGair’s active dehumidification, growers are seeing transformative results:

  • Up to 50% Energy Savings: By keeping thermal screens and vents closed, heat stays where it belongs – inside the greenhouse.
  • 98% Reduction in Disease: Maintaining stable humidity levels prevents condensation on leaves, nearly eliminating the risk of Botrytis and mildew.
  • 10–25% Higher Yields: Stabilized conditions allow plants to focus on growth rather than environmental stress.

To help growers visualize how this technology works, Matts-Erik and the Hatec Baltic team will be at the Puutarha Expo 2026 in Jyväskylä, Finland (April 16–17). They will be performing live demonstrations using a smoke machine to show exactly how DryGair’s patented 360° airflow penetrates dense canopies to eliminate humid microclimates.
